In June of 2005 The Maddy Institute officially launched the Maddy Associates program to bring together a diverse array of distinguished state and national speakers to discuss topics of importance to our region, our state and our nation. Modeled after the Commonwealth Club of California, the Maddy Associates program has been designed to be the key public affairs forum to for Central California – a place where community leaders and those concerned about our region can learn and debate issues of public concern.
In 2007-2008, the Maddy Associates program included 5 informative discussions including:
- The Concord Coalition’s “Fiscal Wake Up Tour” featuring four of the nation’s leading experts on the looming Federal Deficit: David Walker, Comptroller General of the United States; Alice Rivlin a Senior Fellow and the Director of the Greater Washington Research Program at The Brookings Institute-and former OMB Director under in the Clinton Administration; Alison Fraser the Director of the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation; Harry Zeeve the National Field Director of the non-partisan Concord Coalition.
- “Health Care Reform: Down to the Wire” which featured several health care policy experts to get their thoughts on the prognosis for health care reform and what it could mean for the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley.
- The annual "Sacramento Update" with State Senate and State Assembly members from throughout the San Joaquin Valley. This year’s participants included Assemblymember’s Juan Arambula, Bill Maze, Nicole Parra, and Mike Villines. The program is designed so that the Maddy Associates will have the opportunity to meet with each of the legislators in small groups to learn and discuss the regional issues currently being addressed in Sacramento.
- The annual “DC Update” with Congressman George Radanovich and Congressman Jim Costa. Members were able to meet with their Federal Legislators in a small and intimate setting to discuss topics of regional importance to them. Members were also updated on the most recent dealings in Washington, D.C.
- A lunchtime discussion with Kenny Guinn, former Governor of Nevada.
